Quadrilla Review
Mind twisting fun!
Addictive engineering!
| In brief: | Quadrilla is a collection of well made wooden blocks and tracks that lets you build a variety of structures that marbles cascade down through. The Quadrilla basic set will keep younger kids entertained and the larger twist set will entertain children of all ages (adults too)! Both sets can be extended with additional Quadrilla fun sets. |
| Fun Factor (4-6yrs): | 6
Younger children are greatly entertained by the assembled tracks and they will eagerly test tracks while an older sibling or parent builds them. They may also want to build high vertical towers or just use the blocks for building. Let them! They quickly learn from this and start creating more complex structures that the marbles will roll through. Younger kids may sometimes get frustrated by the degree of motor control needed to accurately place the blocks so that the marbles flow smoothly or the ease with which they can accidentally knock down a completed or nearly completed tower. |
| Fun Factor (7-10yrs): | 8
Juniors will find Quadrilla very addictive. Some of the less construction minded may benefit from a bit of help when getting started. Once they are started there is no stopping them. Our six year old quickly began incorporating children's chairs and blocks from other building sets in his self set goal of creating a "really high tower that the marbles could come all the way down". The switch blocks that send marbles in alternate directions are a persistent fascination. |
| Fun Factor (11yrs up): | 5
We often find ourselves building interesting tracks after the kids have gone to bed. The almost musical sound of the marbles on the wood then wakes us in the morning as our kids start playing with them before we get up. The assembled tracks are quite decorative and are likely to stay up for long periods in a teen's room. |
| Smart Factor: | 6 (higher - perhaps 7 or 8 for a typical 6/7 year old)
The six or seven year old will learn a lot about intuitive momentum, levels and construction as they play with this set. There is also a lot of counting and comparison as you ensure that you've put enough spacers into the towers for smooth rolling. Younger kids will benefit from improved coordination and prediction. They love trying to see where the marbles are going to emerge. |
| Longevity: | 6
Quadrilla is a guaranteed regular favourite. As the children pass the age of seven or eight, it may languish at the back of the toy cupboard for weeks at a time but it is sure to re-appear regularly for long and involved sessions. For teens, there is not much of lasting value here but creating aesthetically and acoustically pleasing structures is still surprisingly compelling. |

Jane says:
The 'switching' elements create a new dimension as they send the marbles in differing directions and the 'twists' are visually fasinating.
Set up a different design every evening - just the thing to keep those early risers happy, and Mum and Dad too!!
Time after time we have built it up and knocked it down without a single breakage! The marbles even sound musical as they descend - unlike the annoying plastic alternatives.
The blocks are so tough that they may dent some soft surfaces. They were fine on the wooden floor but I noticed some dents in our old coffee table when Haydon used it to gain some extra height with his towers. If that is a worry, make sure you set it up on a rug!.
Paul says:
Lucas (4) and I have spent hours with the Quadrilla twist set. He loves building up the tower sections and testing the parts as I add tracks and the spiral sections.
We started with the examples in the book and quickly moved on to our own experiments. Having marbles cascade in opposite directions on the same track then converge again to collide and drop to the next level was one element that Lucas never seems to tire of.
You will need something to catch the marbles (paper plates do the trick as does a piece of rope laid out in a curve) and you are likely to want to get a large bag to keep it all in, especially if you succumb to the temptation to buy expansion sets.
The full set can be a bit bewildering at first but all the blocks are nicely color coded and the trick is to ignore the smaller 'accelerator' parts until you need them - Haydon (6) sees the accelerators as his job, adjusting them until the varied sound and pace of the descending marbles is to his liking.
The quality and fun factor of Quadrilla far outstretches any other marble track we have tried. Even the marbles are superior. Quadrilla boasts stability, durability and has a diversity of fun features.
